CMSC (MOFA) - On the 6th of February, 2020, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Regular Press Conference, in responding to a question about the impact of the epidemic towards Vietnam's foreign affair activities, especially in relation to the ASEAN Chairmanship 2020, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang affirmed:

Viet Nam will fulfill its obligation as a member and be fully committed to the role of ASEAN Chairmanship 2020.

Viet Nam is actively implementing measures to respond to and control the epidemic. As the ASEAN Chairman, we have proactively proposed and promoted joint efforts among ASEAN to effectively respond to the epidemic. On the 30th of January, as Chairman of the ASEAN Coordinating Council, Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh sent a letter to ASEAN countries proposing the establishment of a joint ministerial-level cooperation group to strengthen cooperation, share information and coordinate responses to the epidemic.

Viet Nam will closely monitor the epidemic’s development. Changes of ASEAN Chairmanship’s activities if necessary will be made based on consultancy with other member states and ASEAN’s consensus in order to ensure that the activities of the ASEAN chairmanship year can take place at the highest level of security and safety.
